Serengeti Safari
The Serengeti is the ultimate safari destination. It had been on my bucket-list for as long as I could remember and finally visiting felt like a dream come true.
Part of me wondered if the Serengeti would live up to its hype. Well, I can tell you now that this glorious ecosystem far exceeded any expectations I had.
The Serengeti is one of the best places in the world to see Africa’s big cats and is the backdrop to one of nature’s greatest spectacles – the great migration – where millions of wildebeest and zebra make the dangerous journey between Tanzania and Kenya, contending with the mighty Mara River on their way.
Quick Facts
Location: The Serengeti is located to the north west of Tanzania. Getting there by road is a lengthy journey from Arusha. It is recommended that you stay in Karatu, the last major settlement before venturing into the national park. You’ll have to journey through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on your journey.
Best Time to Visit: June to February. As the park is so extensive different areas of the park are best to visit at different times of year. A safe bet is to visit in the dry season between June and October which also times your visit with the great migration. The wildebeest calving season takes place in January and February, a good opportunity to see predators hunt.
Top Tip: This expansive national park covers an area of 14,763 km² so journeying from one end of the park to another takes hours. You’ll definitely want to base yourself within the park for a couple of nights in order to make the best of your time here.
