Rwanda
Rwanda is a small, landlocked country in East Africa known as the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’.
It offers three distinct safari experiences: gorilla trekking in the mist-covered Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzee tracking through the ancient Nyungwe Forest, and classic Big Five game drives in Akagera National Park.
The country has invested heavily in conservation and ecotourism, making it one of the most stable and safest countries in Africa.
Rwanda’s roads are in fantastic condition, the best I have ever driven on in Africa. Everything is clean and well maintained.
Despite its small size, the country packs an incredible variety of landscapes, from volcanic peaks and montane rainforest in the west to the savannah plains and lakes of Akagera in the east. Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes, provides a stunning backdrop for relaxation between wildlife adventures.
Best time to visit Rwanda: The dry season between June and August offers the best conditions, with warm, mostly dry days and excellent gorilla trekking conditions on dry footpaths. Animals congregate around water sources in Akagera National Park. December to February is a secondary dry season that is also excellent for visiting. For a quieter experience, the shoulder season from mid-September to mid-December offers lower prices and shorter gorilla treks as the gorillas descend to lower altitudes.
