Ngorongoro Crater Safari
Ngorongoro Crater is one of those places that makes your jaw drop. It’s not just the vast array of animals that you can encounter here that leave you speechless, it’s the unique landscape – a flat crater floor protected by towering walls on all sides. It feels like a lost world.
Pretty much all of Tanzania’s spectacular wildlife call the crater home, except for giraffes. This is one of the few places in the country where you may be able to spot the elusive black rhino.
Ngorongoro Crater was one of the highlights of my trip to Tanzania. There’s quite frankly no where else on earth like it.
Quick Facts
Location: Ngorongoro Crater can be found in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area which is the gateway to the Serengeti National Park. It’s around a 3.5 hour drive from Arusha, just beyond the town of Karatu. I’d recommend spending a night based near Karatu before visiting the crater.
Best Time to Visit: Year round. As the animals remain in the crater permanently meaning that any time of year allows for good wildlife viewing. The dry season between June and September is the most busy with the rainy season between March and May being the quietest time to visit.
