Mokoro Safari

For something a little bit different, add a safari via a traditional mokoro canoe to your Botswana safari itinerary.

Mokoros are a traditional mode of transport for navigating the shallow waterways of the Okavango Delta. They offer an extremely tranquil experience, allowing you to soak up the beautify of the Delta but without the rumble of an engine.

You can embark on a mokoro safari in both Moremi Game Reserve and Khwai Community Area, both of which are within the Okavango Delta.

A mokoro safari allows you to see the Okavango Delta from a different angle. Whilst traversing the waterways, keep an eye out for waterbucks and warthogs who come down to the water for a drink. You may even spot elephants!

Quick Facts

Location: You can embark on a mokoro safari in both Khwai Community Area and Moremi Game Reserve. There are a number of launch spots in both areas.

Best Time to Visit: The dry season between June and October provides the best time to take to the Delta in a mokoro. During July and August, water levels are at their highest so there will be more channels to explore.

Top Tip: Mokoros don’t have canopies or shade so I’d recommend wearing a sun hat and plenty of suncream. It can get hot on the water so bring lots of water too.

My Mokoro Experience

I took to the waters in a mokoro in Khwai Community Area. The following video documents my time in Khwai. Skip to the 22 minute mark to see my mokoro experience.
