Khwai Safari

Sandwiched between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, Khwai Community Area makes the perfect second stop on a Botswana safari itinerary. Whilst it may be small, this pocket of the Okavango Delta is rich in wildlife, especially when it comes to predators.

Khwai is well-regarded as one of the best places in Africa to see leopards. Let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint! I spent hours watching a magnificent male leopard eat a freshly-caught warthog in a tree whilst hyenas circled hungrily below.

Another thing I love about Khwai is the fact that it’s a community owned concession, owned by the native San people.

Quick Facts

Location: Khwai is around a 5 hour drive north east from the town of Maun. It’s conveniently located between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, making a safari circuit of all 3 very easy.

Best Time to Visit: The dry season between June and October when the weather isn’t too hot and there is minimal rainfall is the best time to visit. This is also the denning season for wild dogs and hyenas, making sightings of them easier.

Top Tip: Whilst leopard sightings do occur more regularly here than other places, they’re still not exactly common so to increase your chances of seeing a leopard, spend at least 3 nights in Khwai.
