Amboseli Safari
Renowned as one of the best places in the world to see African elephants, Amboseli is my personal favourite National Park in Kenya. Sitting in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, the landscape here is simply breathtaking!
Amboseli is home to some of the world’s last Big Tusker elephants, elephants whose tusks pretty much touch the floor. Seeing these giants honestly took my breath away.
But there’s more to Amboseli than elephants. Allow a full day here to see the diverse landscapes of the park which house an abundance of birdlife, prides of lions and even cheetahs. I’ve had my best ever cheetah sightings in Amboseli.
Quick Facts
Location: Amboseli is 5.5 hours south east of Nairobi by road, or 1 hour away by plane. It straddles the border with Tanzania, allowing wonderful views of Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro. Whilst Amboseli is a bit out the way from the usual safari circuit, I believe it’s well-worth a detour.
Best Time to Visit: During the dry season, between June and October, Lake Amboseli dries up and offers spectacular sights of animals marching across the parched landscape. At other times of year the lake is full and this reduces the size of the park drastically as half of it becomes submerged. This is still a good time to visit however, especially if you like seeing birds.
Top Tip: Stay either within Amboseli National Park or just outside Kimana gate on the eastern edge of the park. This area is close to where most wildlife can be seen in Amboseli. You’ll want to be in the park for 7am in order to see the elephants on their daily journey to the heart of the park and then see them again as they leave around 5pm.
