Maasai Tribe Visit

The Maasai Tribe are one of the most famous tribes in the world, renowned for their colourful dress and as fearsome warriors.

Northern Tanzania and Kenya is the heartland for the Maasai where you can find their settlements known as bomas. A visit to a Maasai boma provides a unique and eye-opening experience where you can learn about their traditional culture.

A typical visit to a Maasai boma involves witnessing traditional song and dance, learning how they make fires and entering Maasai houses. However, there is so much more of Maasai culture to see which is exactly why I customised my visit to the Maasai to incorporate learning about Maasai cuisine.

Quick Facts

Location: The Maasai are predominantly found in the region surrounding Lake Manyara National Park as well as within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania. In Kenya they can be found in the south near the Masai Mara and Amboseli.

Best Time to Visit: The Maasai are a nomadic tribe, typically spending 6 months in one location before moving somewhere else for another 6 months, following the rains. You can visit the Maasai tribe in their temporary bomas at any time of year.

Top Tip: The Maasai have a unique culture and still follow ancient traditions. When visiting any culture which is different to your own please stay open minded and respectful.
